Powered pallet truck and stacker training
The pedestrian and rider trucks that move pallets around a warehouse, and the stackers that lift them onto racking. Short RTITB courses leading to the PPT licence — in law a certificate of basic training — and often the first one a warehouse operative earns.

About the training
PPT stands for powered pallet truck: an electric truck that lifts a pallet a few inches off the floor and moves it, with the operator either walking beside it (pedestrian) or riding on it (rider). A stacker is the same idea with a mast, so it can lift pallets into racking. Both are RTITB category A.
A1 is the pedestrian pallet truck and A2 the rider pallet truck. A3 to A7 cover pedestrian counterbalance trucks, rider and pedestrian stackers, straddle stackers and pedestrian reach trucks. Pedestrian courses are shorter than rider courses; the length for each level is on the course page.

powered pallet truck training: questions we get asked
Is there such a thing as a PPT licence?
Not as a government-issued document. What people call a PPT licence is a certificate of basic training on a powered pallet truck, registered with an accrediting body such as RTITB and backed by your employer's written authorisation to operate. It is what an auditor or an HSE inspector will ask to see, and it is what our A1 to A7 courses lead to.
Do you run pedestrian stacker training?
Yes. Pedestrian stacker training sits in the same RTITB category A family as the pallet trucks, and covers walking the machine, lifting into racking and the stability limits that catch people out when a load goes up rather than along. Rider stackers and straddle stackers are covered too.
What does PPT mean in a warehouse?
PPT is a powered pallet truck, sometimes called a powered pallet jack or an electric pallet truck. It lifts a pallet just clear of the floor and moves it under its own power. A pedestrian PPT is walked; a rider PPT has a platform or seat for the operator.
Do you need training to use a powered pallet truck?
Yes. A powered pallet truck is a lift truck under the HSE's Approved Code of Practice L117, so operators need basic training and their employer's authorisation before using one. The A1 course is typically three days for a novice group and one day as a refresher.
What is the difference between a pallet truck and a stacker?
A pallet truck lifts a pallet a few inches to move it. A stacker has a mast and lifts pallets to height, so it can put them into racking. They are separate RTITB categories, A1 or A2 for pallet trucks and A4 to A6 for stackers, and each needs its own certificate.
